Using SoundSource to stream audio from your Mac via AirPlay
SoundSource gives you powerful control of audio streaming, making it possible to play the exact audio you want throughout your house, all in sync! With SoundSource, you can stream audio from your Mac to one or multiple AirPlay devices on your network.
This page provide details on the many ways you can use SoundSource to stream via AirPlay.
What SoundSource can do with AirPlay
Stream to any and all modern AirPlay 2 hardware
SoundSource is built on top of technology provided by MacOS itself, which enables it to support all the same devices as Music.app and the Mac itself. That includes HomePods and HomePods Mini, Apple TVs, Sonos hardware, and countless other Airplay-capable speakers, smart TVs, and set-top boxes.
Stream individual applications to an AirPlay device
SoundSource makes it a snap to stream only the audio from a specific application via AirPlay. Here’s an example of Spotify streaming to a HomePod, with SoundSource’s easy output redirection:
Streaming Spotify’s audio to an AirPlay device is as easy as selecting Living Room HomePod in the output selector.
Stream to multiple AirPlay devices, with output groups
With SoundSource’s powerful output groups, you can stream any audio to multiple AirPlay devices, all in sync. To start, create a group of multiple AirPlay devices in the Output Groups window. Here, we’ve made a group called “First Floor”, consisting of three devices: “Bathroom Sonos”, “Den Sonos”, and “Kitchen HomePod Mini”.
Once a group is made, simply select it in any of SoundSource’s output selectors. The specified audio will be sent to all of the selected devices, which will play it in sync.
Stream all audio to one or multiple AirPlay devices
MacOS’s basic audio controls allow you to stream all of your Mac’s audio to a single AirPlay device, by setting it as the output device for the system. SoundSource provides a handy selector for that, with its System Output device picker.
You might want to send all of your Mac’s audio to multiple devices, and SoundSource’s powerful output groups make that possible. Set an output group as your Mac’s System Output and all of your Mac’s audio will be sent to all of the selected AirPlay devices.
Stream from one Mac to another
With SoundSource and MacOS’s AirPlay Receiver functionality, you can stream from one Mac to another. Just enable AirPlay Receiver in System Settings > General > Airdrop & Handoff on the Mac you want to receive audio.
Once you do, SoundSource will see the remote Mac as an available output device.
And if you to stream from one Mac to multiple other Macs on your network, output groups once again make it easy.
Apply effects to AirPlay audio
With its simple built-in effects, as well as support for advanced Audio Units, SoundSource can make any app’s audio sound great. Now, you can apply those effects to audio before streaming it out via AirPlay.
Transmit multiple distinct streams from your Mac
In addition to 1-1 and 1-N streaming, SoundSource also makes it possible to do N-to-N AirPlay transmissions from your Mac. Here, we’re sending Spotify’s audio to a HomePod while Safari’s audio goes to a Sonos device.
