Information for:
Collecting crash logs to help solve issues with Fission

When an application unexpectedly quits, MacOS automatically creates a file called a crash log. A crash log may contain important information about the cause of the crash. Because they can be useful in tracking down problems, our support team may ask for crash logs to diagnose problems you report.

Open the Console app

Apple automatically lists crash log files within the Console utility. To quickly access Console, use the Utilities command in the Finder's Go menu.

When the Console application is launched, its sidebar lists several different types of stored data files. Here, we’ll focus on the Crash Reports section.

Search for Crash Logs

Depending on the issue, a crash log's file name may reference the name of the specific application you're using, the background component for our Audio Routing Kit, arkaudiod, or the audio sub-system in MacOS, coreaudiod.

Selecting the Crash Reports section then typing each of those terms into the Search field in the top right corner of the Console window individually can narrow the list of available logs down to those that are relevant to ongoing issues. Clicking the Date column will sort the list by date, which can help with locating logs that directly coincide with crashing events.

If searching does not reveal any crash logs, the app may not be crashing in the course of the issue you are noticing. In that case, contact our support team to determine the next steps.

Send Crash Logs to Our Support Team

When selecting a relevant log file, you can use the Reveal in Finder command in the File menu (or right-click/control-click menu) to locate the original file on disk. This will open in a new Finder window.

Any relevant crash logs will have the file extension .ips. If more than one log file is available, you can combine multiple files using the Compress command in the File menu, which will create a zip file for easier sending.

Attach the log or zip file to an email to our support team for further review.
