Preliminary Support for MacOS 15 (Sequoia) Betas
Airfoil will no longer warn every launch when run on MacOS 15 (Sequoia). There are no known issues on Sequoia at present, but do note that these betas remain in flux. To avoid problems, we always encourage users to stick with Apple’s official (non-beta) OS releases. -
Return of the “Text to Speech” Special Source
The “Text to Speech” special source has returned, to capture speech audio from applications which do not directly play generated speech (typically triggered by the “Start Speaking” command in the “Speech” menu) via their own process. -
Improvements to Special Sources
The “Siri” special source now correctly includes sound effects on MacOS 14 (Sonoma), and the “VoiceOver” special source has been optimized to capture only necessary processes. -
If you’re running the latest version of Airfoil when you check for an update, the resulting information screen now provides a helpful “View Release Notes” button.

Capture of audio played to secondary devices by VoIP applications has been improved.

When Airfoil Satellite for Mac is receiving audio sent from an iOS device via AirPlay, remote control actions like play/pause no longer trigger an exception.

“System Audio” Source Updates
The “System Audio” source, used to stream all audio playing on the Mac, has now been renamed “System-Wide Audio”.
Please be aware that an issue with MacOS 14.4 may cause audio dropouts when using this source. Fixes are expected in a forthcoming update to MacOS, but you may wish to delay updating Airfoil.
Alternately, to work around the issue, select a specific application as your source. For more details, see this link. -
A Powerful New Audio Capture Backend
Airfoil now uses a new audio capture backend called Audio Routing Kit, or “ARK” for short. Thanks to ARK, Airfoil can be set up on a new Mac in seconds, with no restarts or passwords required. -
New “System Audio Access” Permission
The “Permissions” window has been updated, with a new “System Audio Access” permission. This permission enables you to use Airfoil to stream audio from applications you specify. -
Standard User Accounts Welcome
Standard MacOS user accounts can now stream audio with Airfoil, without needing any help from an Administrator account. -
Erroneous Microphone-In-Use Indicators, Begone!
Previously, when Airfoil was playing audio to a device that also has input channels, or capturing from any application on MacOS 14.2 and higher, MacOS would erroneously display its orange microphone-in-use indicator. With changes to Airfoil’s audio capture backend, that is no longer the case, and we’re very glad about it. -
The “Sources” menu has been updated to alphabetize using the on-disk name, which ensures apps like “Ableton Live” appear where you’d expect.

Using the “Factory Reset” option in the “Debugging” window now correctly visually updates the “Hidden Settings” section.

Improvements in ACE 11.8.2
The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.8.2, with many improvements for even more reliable audio capture. This includes a workaround for issues with FaceTime volume when using the built-in microphone, as well as an improvement in dealing with poorly implemented Audio Units. Tracking of audio device sample clocks also now works better when the device is providing erroneous information. CPU usage has been reduced in many common audio flows, clock synchronization across devices has been improved, and persistent device tracking has been improved. -

Airfoil's manual is now provided online, rather than being built in to the application. The application's “Help” menu has also been modified and streamlined, to get you assistance as quickly as possible.

Major Updates in ACE 11.7
The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.7. Its sample rate converter has been upgraded, drift correction has been improved, and several rare issues have been resolved. -
Support for Xcode's Simulator
It's now possible to capture audio from Xcode's Simulator with Airfoil. -
Enhancements to Airfoil's Built-In Updating
Airfoil's updating code has been overhauled and improved. It is now based on Sparkle 1.26.0, with several customizations.• To avoid possible issues, Airfoil will no longer offer to “Install on Quit”. Automatic background updating has been removed as well, placing the user in charge of all updates.
• The update interface has been improved, with several design and text enhancements.
• Finally, the new “Skip for Now” button allows you to delay updating if desired.
As always, we strongly recommend leaving the “Automatically check for updates” option enabled.

Chromecast speaker sync settings are now correctly retained between launches.

The Quick Tour now properly supports the new “Speak items under the pointer” setting in MacOS 11 (Big Sur).

At present, Airfoil is able to stream directly to all Apple TV models. As such, the use of Airfoil Satellite TV should not be necessary. That said, enhancements have been made for using Airfoil with Airfoil Satellite TV. A new icon now shows in Airfoil, and a fix has been made for Airfoil Satellite TV occasionally not appearing, when multiple AirPlay sources are available from a single host.

The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.2, with many backend enhancements. Catalyst apps like “Voice Memos” are now fully supported, aggregate devices now work better, and many other small improvements have been made. -
The “Effects” window has been updated and standardized with other Rogue Amoeba apps. Double-clicking a slider's readout will reset the slider to its default position. Double-clicking the slider itself will no longer cause any change.

Fix for Audio Playback Issues When Using Volume Overdrive
Audio corruption which could occur when using the Effect's window's “Volume Overdrive” functionality has been corrected. Audio playback should now sound correct in all setups. -
The “Volume” slider in the Effects window once again has a detent (sticking point) at 100%. The “Balance” slider has also been updated, to better indicate the current setting.

An Overhauled Equalizer
Airfoil's built-in Lagutin Equalizer has been substantially improved. It now offers a new sparkline indicator in the Presets menu, as well as improved custom Preset saving and editing. Transitions between presets now animate beautifully as well. -

Airfoil's new “Alerts” window puts all errors and notices in one place for easy reference, to keep things working smoothly. -
MiX16 Track Titles
Track title support has been updated to support all versions of MiX16. -
Multiple Track Titles Improvements
The performance of Spotify track title retrieval has been improved using the Scripting Bridge API. Track titles from Audirvana are once again supported. Other track titles have been sped up, including Music (and iTunes), as well as VLC. -
Audio Capture Improvements and Fixes With ACE 11.1.5
Airfoil's audio capture, powered by the Audio Capture Engine (ACE), has been updated to 11.1.5. This update offers fixes for capturing audio from Google Chrome's “Progressive Web Apps”, as well as many backend enhancements including additional fixes for device tracking, and work arounds for issues with Bluetooth. -

Speaker Groups
A group is a collection of multiple speakers which appears as one in Airfoil's main window. Use a Group to send audio to multiple outputs with a single click. Create one group for all the speakers in your house, or divide your speakers into zones. Now you can send audio exactly where you want even faster. -
Silence Monitor
Great for workplace or shared home setups, the new silence monitor allows Airfoil to automatically disconnect itself when it's streaming silence. The output device is then be freed up for others to use. -
Custom Equalizer Presets
Adjust the equalizer to your liking, then save it in the Preset menu. Now you'll be able to access those exact settings any time you like. -
Hide Speakers
If you regularly connect to a shared network which contains devices you don't control, you may wish to hide them entirely from Airfoil. Now you can do so, from the “Advanced Speaker Options” window. -
Adjust Sync
Airfoil automatically keeps all outputs completely in sync. However, there may be rare situations where you wish to adjust this, such as when an output is connected to a receiver which adds its own latency. The new Sync sliders in the “Advanced Speaker Options” window make this possible. -
Beautifully Refined Interface
Airfoil for Mac and Airfoil Satellite for Mac have both been improved, all without changing too much. The interface will still be familiar to users of older versions of Airfoil, but it also features many improvements. There are improvements like longer volume sliders in Airfoil's main window, as well as beautiful new graphics that are fully updated for Retina displays. Meanwhile Airfoil Satellite has been updated to include the new controls for controlling Airfoil, while retaining all that the previous “Airfoil Speakers” application offered. -
