Piezo 1.9.4Full MacOS 15 Support

    Piezo now offers full support for MacOS 15 (Sequoia), with no known incompatibilities.

  • The license unlock sound now plays via the “systemsoundserverd” process, which correctly respects the system’s alert volume and device preference.

  • A rare crash when using devices with mismatched sample rates has been fixed.

  • Audio will now mute as expected when running the latest versions of SoundSource alongside Piezo.

  • Piezo 1.9.4 Is for MacOS 14.4 and Higher

Piezo 1.9.3Preliminary MacOS 15 Support

  • Preliminary Support for MacOS 15 (Sequoia) Betas
    Piezo will no longer warn every launch when run on MacOS 15 (Sequoia). There are no known issues on Sequoia at present, but do note that these betas remain in flux. To avoid problems, we always encourage users to stick with Apple’s official (non-beta) OS releases.

  • The “What’s New” notes will once again properly display on the first launch of a new version. This fixes a regression introduced in version 1.9.2.

  • Piezo 1.9.3 Is for MacOS 14.4 and Higher
    This variant of Piezo supports MacOS 14.4 and higher. On MacOS 11 through 14.3.1, a different variant is automatically used, with no action required on your part.

  • Capture of audio played to secondary devices by VoIP applications has been improved.

  • If you’re running the latest version of Piezo when you check for an update, the resulting information screen now provides a helpful “View Release Notes” button.

  • Waking after sleep no longer incorrectly stops audio capture, fixing a recent regression.

  • Volume levels have been improved when performing stereo to mono downmixing.

  • Accessibility improvements have been made for the “Permissions” window.

  • Piezo’s audio capture has been updated to correctly capture audio from Xcode Playgrounds.

  • Piezo will no longer unexpectedly activate unused input devices (such as Continuity microphones like iPhones) when a VoIP app is targeted.

  • The “Check for Updates” button in the “Settings” window now works correctly.

  • Re-selecting the current application in the “Source” menu while recording no longer incorrectly stops recording.

  • The “Show/Hide Settings” option previously found in the “Record” menu has been renamed “Show/Hide Recording Options”, to avoid confusion with the app’s “Settings” window (formerly “Preferences”).

  • Artwork tweaks have been made to provide the most realistic needle drawing possible.

  • A Powerful New Audio Capture Backend
    Piezo now uses a new audio capture backend called Audio Routing Kit, or “ARK” for short. Thanks to ARK, Piezo can be set up on a new Mac in seconds, with no restarts or passwords required.

  • New “System Audio Access” Permission
    The “Permissions” window has been updated, with a new “System Audio Access” permission. This permission enables you to use Piezo to record audio from applications you specify.

  • Standard User Accounts Welcome
    Standard MacOS user accounts can now record audio with Piezo, without needing any help from an Administrator account.

  • Erroneous Microphone-In-Use Indicators, Begone!
    Previously, when Piezo was playing audio to a device that also has input channels, or capturing from any application on MacOS 14.2 and higher, MacOS would erroneously display its orange microphone-in-use indicator. With changes in Piezo’s audio capture backend, that is no longer the case, and we’re very glad about it.

  • Corrections have been made to the default applications listed under “Recent Applications” on first launch.

  • On launch, Piezo will now always interact as expected with previously selected sources.

  • The “Recent Applications” section of the “Sources” has been improved to include apps dragged and dropped into Piezo, and to ignore apps that have been rejected.

  • The “Sources” menu has been updated to alphabetize using the on-disk name, which ensures apps like “Ableton Live” appear where you’d expect.

  • Assorted drawing bugs associated with updates to MacOS 14 have been corrected.

  • Piezo now provides a new “Limit audio capture to default output” hidden preference, for use with apps that play audio to multiple audio devices.

  • Piezo now includes an automated re-downloader, to ensure you have the proper variant for your MacOS version.

  • Piezo’s “About” box now shows the details about the audio engine it’s using.

    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.9.6, with improvements to provide even more reliable audio capture.

  • The look of the default “Select a source” view has been improved.

  • Piezo will now launch and run as expected on MacOS 14.1.

  • The celebratory sound effect heard when unlocking Piezo will now correctly play through the Mac’s configured “Sound Effects” device. After all, sound effects play through a separately configured output in MacOS.

  • It’s now possible to control-click in the “Name” and “Code” fields of the “License” window, making it possible to copy and paste in data.

Piezo 1.8.0Initial Support for MacOS 14

    Piezo now has initial compatibility with the forthcoming MacOS 14 (Sonoma), with no known issues.

  • Improvements in ACE 11.9.4
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.9.4, with compatibility for MacOS 14 (Sonoma), correct capture of audio from Xcode Playgrounds, and many smaller improvements for even more reliable audio capture.

  • New “Permissions” Window
    The “Piezo” menu now includes a new “Permissions” window, to easily enable the “Microphone Access” permissions. These permissions are required for Piezo to record audio from microphones and other input devices you specify.

  • Nextiva VoIP Capture Support
    The Nextiva desktop app is now supported as a VoIP audio source, making it easy to record both halves of a conversation.

  • Piezo’s “About” box now shows the version of MacOS upon which it is currently running.

Piezo 1.7.13

  • Updates to VoIP Capture Support for Cisco Webex
    Changes have been made to ensure Piezo can capture from Webex.

  • Improvements in ACE 11.9.3
    The ACE audio capture engine has been updated with minor changes.

  • Piezo’s “Source” menu once again uses a single down arrow, the correct look for a pull-down button.

  • Work has been done to avoid an issue where new ACE installations could incorrectly show an “Almost Ready” screen after restarting.

  • A new “Uninstall ACE” option has been added to the “Debugging” window, accessible (by holding Option) before the app has fully launched.

  • A channel mapping issue which could affect devices containing both inputs and outputs when capturing from VoIP apps has been corrected.

Piezo 1.7.9

  • Improvements in ACE 11.8.2
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.8.2, with many improvements for even more reliable audio capture. This includes a workaround for issues with FaceTime volume when using the built-in microphone, as well as an improvement in dealing with poorly implemented Audio Units. Tracking of audio device sample clocks also now works better when the device is providing erroneous information. CPU usage has been reduced in many common audio flows, clock synchronization across devices has been improved, and persistent device tracking has been improved.

  • StarLeaf VoIP Capture Support
    The StarLeaf Mac app is now supported as a VoIP audio source, making it easy to record both halves of a conversation.

  • An issue where upsampling of certain low sample rates could sometimes produce audio artifacts has been resolved.

  • When the full version of Piezo has been unlocked, the “License” window now subtly shows the application's version number.

  • Fussy typography improvements have been made to the mailing list sign-up window shown at the fifth launch for new users, as well as the “Release Notes” window shown at the first launch of a new version, which you might be looking at right now!

  • Software Update checks now occur only after the Welcome Window has been closed.

Piezo 1.7.8

    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.7.8, with several small improvements for even more reliable audio capture.

  • As a result of changes to MacOS, the Shortcuts app erroneously showed non-functional Shortcuts for Piezo. This has been corrected, and those invalid Shortcuts will no longer appear.

  • Signal VoIP Capture Support
    The Signal Mac app is now supported as a VoIP audio source, making it easy to record both halves of a conversation.

Piezo 1.7.4

  • Fixes and Improvements in ACE 11.7.1
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.7.1, with fixes for several rare issues.

  • Enhancements to Piezo's Built-In Updating
    Piezo's updating code has been overhauled and improved. It is now based on Sparkle 1.26.0, with several customizations.

        • To avoid possible issues, Piezo will no longer offer to “Install on Quit”. Automatic background updating has been removed as well, placing the user in charge of all updates.

        • The update interface has been improved, with several design and text enhancements.

        • Finally, the new “Skip for Now” button allows you to delay updating if desired.

    As always, we strongly recommend leaving the “Automatically check for updates” option enabled.

  • Piezo's manual is now provided online, rather than being built in to the application. The application's “Help” menu has also been modified and streamlined, to get you assistance as quickly as possible.

  • Piezo has been updated to prevent rare issues with its main window failing to appear on screen.

  • Many debugging improvements have been made:

        • Available logs have been cleaned up.

        • Active logs are now listed in the logging files.

        • Machine details are no longer needlessly included in copied errors.

        • Logs are now activated with simple checkboxes.

        • When a log is activated, it will also collect recent crash logs, to better understand any issues.

        • A “Quit and Relaunch for Debugging” option has been added, accessed by pressing option in the Help menu.

        • Command-line debugging options have been added.

  • It's now possible to access several relevant menu items while the initial Quick Tour is open.

  • The “Purchase” button in the License window now uses a better link to get to the Buy page.

  • The Update window's width has been tweaked, to handle longer titles.

  • Get Access to Test Builds
    Piezo now features a new “Check for test releases” hidden preference. When active, you may receive notice of pre-release versions of the software, ahead of its wide release. If you're interested to test updates, you can turn this option on in the Debugging window (accessible by holding option while viewing the “Help” menu, then selecting “Quit and Relaunch for Debugging”).

Piezo 1.7.3

  • Major Updates in ACE 11.7
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.7. Its sample rate converter has been upgraded, drift correction has been improved, and several rare issues have been resolved.

  • Support for Xcode's Simulator
    It's now possible to record audio from Xcode's Simulator with Piezo.

  • The Quick Tour now properly supports the new “Speak items under the pointer” setting in MacOS 11 (Big Sur).

  • Improvements have been made for the Installer and Quick Tour, to present better on small resolutions, using scrollbars to make all content accessible.

  • When Piezo is unlocked by entering a valid license key, in addition to displaying an animation, it will now play a brief celebratory sound for visually impaired users.

Piezo 1.7.2

    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.6.3. This update has several fixes, and provides further handling for future MacOS updates running on Apple Silicon. As before, M1 Mac users should update immediately.

Piezo 1.7.0Full Support for MacOS 11

  • Initial Support for M Chip-Based Macs
    Piezo is now a Universal app, offering initial support for the new M1 chip-based Macs. Though there are no known issues, we do not yet recommend its use in critical productions. Further testing is ongoing, with more updates to follow.

  • Full MacOS 11 (Big Sur) Compatibility
    Piezo now has full compatibility with MacOS 11 (Big Sur), with no known issues.

  • ACE 11.6 Brings Audio Capture to Apple Silicon Macs
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.6, offering compatibility with Apple Silicon Macs.

  • Piezo now respects the user-specified system-wide “Accent” color on MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) and up. It also supports Big Sur's new “Multicolor” option, with an appropriate, app-specific brown.

  • Piezo will now capture both halves of conversations for users beta testing voice and video calls in the Whatsapp Desktop app.

Piezo 1.6.10

  • Updates to the names of Loopback virtual audio devices are now immediately reflected.

Piezo 1.6.8

  • Additional Audio Fixes in ACE 11.2.2
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.2.2, fixing several issues. Playback to Bluetooth devices has been improved, non-standard audio formats will again play as expected, and several regressions have been fixed.

  • Piezo's play-thru setting has been adjusted for clarity. Now entitled “Enable Play-Thru While Recording”, it applies solely when Piezo is actively recording from a source.

  • When Piezo re-names a file due to a leading dot, the magnifying glass will now properly reveal the recording, as expected.

    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.2.1, fixing a regression which would cause captured input audio to be improperly muted, as well as a crash which could occur with multi-output devices.

  • Audio Capture Improvements With ACE 11.2, Including Full Support for Catalyst Apps
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.2, with many backend enhancements. Catalyst apps like “Voice Memos” are now fully supported, aggregate devices now work better, and many other small improvements have been made.

  • VoIP Capture Support for Several Additional Apps
    Jamulus and Jami are now supported as a VoIP audio source, making it easy to record both halves of a conversation. Support for Cisco's various chat applications has also been improved.

  • Support for Chrome's “Progressive Web Apps”
    Audio will now be captured from Chrome web apps, also known as progressive web apps.

  • Leading periods in filenames are now replaced with dashes, to prevent recordings from being hidden.

  • Piezo is not yet compatible with MacOS 11 (Big Sur), but we expect to have an additional release with support in the very near future. Stay tuned!

Piezo 1.6.5

  • Improvements and Fixes With ACE 11.1.4
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.1.4, with many backend enhancements including additional fixes for device tracking, and work arounds for issues with Bluetooth.

  • Facebook Messenger VoIP Capture Support
    Facebook's Messenger app is now supported as a VoIP audio source, making it easy to record both halves of a conversation.

  • Webex VoIP Capture Support
    Cisco's Webex and Webex Teams apps are now supported as VoIP audio sources, making it easy to record both halves of a conversation.

  • Several other small changes have been made. Piezo's preferences window has been widened and the explanatory text for version checking has been indented. Several manual images were updated, and the License window has been modified slightly for better performance with VoiceOver.

Piezo 1.6.4

  • ACE Update
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.1.2, with many backend enhancements, and bug fixes when dealing with aggregate devices.

  • A slight correction has been made to Piezo's welcome window, so it only states an ACE update is required when one actually is.

  • Small changes have been made to Piezo's preferences window, updating the explanatory text for version checking.

Piezo 1.6.3

  • Full MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) Support
    At this time, Piezo now has full compatibility with MacOS 10.15 (Catalina).

  • Enhanced Audio Capture with ACE 11.1
    The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.1, with many backend enhancements.

  • Further improvements have been made to the tracking of USB audio devices.

  • A small change has been made to the Preferences window, to provide details on automatic checking and anonymous usage data.

  • A useful “Reinstall ACE” debugging option is now available by option-clicking the Piezo menu. This will uninstall and then immediately reinstall ACE.

Piezo 1.6.2

  • Improvements for Recording From Input Devices
    Piezo's tracking of physical input devices has been overhauled and dramatically improved. It will now better handle issues caused by many USB audio devices, automatically tracking devices across restarts and between ports on your computer, so fewer adjustments are necessary.

  • ACE 11.0.1 Update
    The backend Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.0.1. As part of this update, audio capture from Skype will again occur at the expected volume.

  • AAC Recording Fix
    An issue where AAC recording did not work correctly on MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) has been corrected.

  • Piezo's “wizard” window has received many backend updates and improvements.

Piezo 1.6.1Adds Support for MacOS 10.15

  • Piezo now has preliminary compatibility with MacOS 10.15 (Catalina).

  • The backend Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 11.0.0, with preliminary MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) compatibility as well as other fixes and improvements. ACE is now required to use Piezo. If it is not currently installed, you'll be prompted to install it at launch.

  • On MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) and higher, Piezo now offers general Dark Mode support on windows throughout the app.

  • Piezo now requires MacOS 10.12 (Sierra) or higher. If you're still on 10.11 (or lower), be sure to see our Legacy Software page.

  • Piezo's Help menu now includes a useful new Release Notes window, so you can see changes across all versions from right inside the app.

  • Small interface changes have been made, including changes to the Message windows used to convey certain information to the user.

  • The About box has been updated to provide additional version information in an easy-to-read fashion.

  • A new wizard has been added to Piezo for installing, updating, and removing ACE (among other things). It includes a new “Quick Tour” to provide a helpful overview of the application. It will also present update notes on the first launch of a new version, and intelligently warn if uninstalling ACE will impact other applications.

  • The “old-style hijacker” option has been removed from Piezo's Hidden Preferences.

Piezo 1.6.0

  • The reliability of audio recording under heavy loads has been increased.

  • Improvements and interface modifications have been made to Piezo's Source selector, as well as the audio device icon.

  • The Audio Capture Engine (ACE) backend has been updated to 10.0.1, for the most robust and reliable audio capture.

  • An issue where Piezo's popover could incorrectly display multiple connectors on MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) has been corrected.

  • A ridiculously rare bug (known internally as the “wiggle freeze”), where jiggling windows with skillful timing could cause the Settings popover to get stuck out of position, has been fixed.

Piezo 1.5.12

  • Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 10.0, for the most robust and reliable audio capture.

  • Some small improvements have been made for those using VoiceOver. The Source popup menu now reads out the currently selected Source, and a readout of the current recording filename is also now available to VO users.

  • The support form in Piezo's Help menu has been updated.

  • Audio Capture Engine (ACE) has been updated to 9.1.2, with full MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) compatibility and a fix for capturing audio from Voice Memos and other ports from iOS to Mac (“Marzipan” apps).

  • Piezo now better handles error reporting when attempting to capture from apps which require the ACE extra.

  • Piezo's source selector now behaves better with sources requiring ACE.

  • VoiceOver has been updated to work around a change Apple made on MacOS 10.14. Menu items will again properly reflect the most recent action taken.

  • Instant On has been updated to version 8.4.4, with important crash fixes for MacOS 10.13, as well as improved logging.

  • We've fixed an issue where play-thru of application sources did not function correctly if Instant On was not installed.

  • Enhancements: Several important improvements have been made to improve the way Piezo behaves for VoiceOver users.

  • Piezo's preliminary compatibility with MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra) has been improved. We still strongly recommend users stick with a fully supported version of MacOS for now, but if you're on High Sierra, make sure you update to the latest Piezo (and the latest Instant On).

  • Visual and reliability improvements have been made to our Extras installer window.

Piezo 1.5.3

  • Piezo now has full VoIP capture support for Amazon Chime, Jabber, Microsoft Teams, QQ, and WeChat.

  • Instant On has been updated to version 8.4.3, with improvements to audio capture from VMWare Fusion, FaceTime, and Flash running in Safari.

  • Play-thru of audio from app sources has been modified to reduce latency. The Play-Thru menu item has also been improved for better clarity.

  • The audio capture backend has been updated to be more robust, and this new style capture is now used by default when Instant On is installed. Users shouldn't notice any changes.

  • Piezo now has (extremely) preliminary compatibility with MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra). We still strongly recommend users stick with a fully supported version of MacOS for now.

  • Many small improvements have been added to make reading the Help manual easier.
