To avoid playback issues, SoundSource deactivates when other audio capture is detected

The simultaneous use of multiple applications which capture audio on your Mac has the potential for undesirable audio playback, including doubled audio. This is especially relevant to SoundSource, which is generally left running at all times. We’ve designed our own products to work well together, so you shouldn’t have any issues using SoundSource alongside Airfoil, Audio Hijack, Loopback, or Piezo.

However, other products can also capture audio on your Mac, and that may lead to playback issues like doubled audio. To avoid this problem, SoundSource works to detect when other apps are capturing audio, and then deactivates its own audio processing. When SoundSource’s processing is disabled, it displays a warning triangle next to the system output (and any other applications using that same output):

When that ⚠️ is clicked, SoundSource will display a notice to explain what has occurred:

The “Learn More…” button brings you to this page.

When you stop capturing audio with another application, SoundSource’s audio processing is restored automatically.
