Loopback 2: Audio Routing, Simplified

Audio routing on the Mac just got easier and more powerful!

Boston, MA - Today, Rogue Amoeba is thrilled to announce the immediate availability of Loopback 2, a major leap forward for our more-successful-than-expected audio routing tool. Loopback enables powerful audio routing between applications and audio devices on the Mac, making it easy to pass audio directly between apps with just a few clicks.

Users can take the sound from apps and hardware devices, then pass it to any audio processing software. Loopback provides the power of a high-end studio mixing board, with no actual cables required.

Popular Uses for Loopback

The power of Loopback is great for a wide variety of uses, including:

Playing Audio to All Podcast Guests

When a physical microphone is coupled with a music player (like iTunes) or a a soundboard app (like our own Farrago), guests on Skype are able to hear a voice, musical add-ons, and sound effects.

Creating Top-Notch Screencasts

Screen recording tools grab either microphone audio from or all the system audio, but neither option is ideal. With Loopback, record just the mic and the application being filmed.

Using Pass-Thru Devices

Loopback's virtual audio devices also make it easy to pass audio directly from one application to another without any configuration. A “Pass-Thru device” can be used as both an audio input and an audio output throughout the system to pipe audio directly between applications.

And So Much More

Thousands of audio users swear by Loopback, and our site provides many more examples of how this versatile tool is helping folks get things done with audio.

What's New in Loopback 2

Since it first shipped in early 2016, Loopback has built a substantial audience of podcasters, screencasters, audio techs, and much more. This popularity gave us a chance to go back to the drawing board for version 2, and we focused on making the app both more powerful and more accessible.

  • The app has been simplified, with an intuitive wire-based interface that makes it easy to understand how audio is flowing.
  • New volume controls allow users to adjust any levels, anywhere.
  • Robust monitoring options make it possible to hear exactly what's needed
  • Capture of hidden sources, like Siri and VoiceOver, is now possible with Loopback.
  • Virtual audio devices now support up to a massive 64 channels.
  • On/Off toggles on sources and monitors make temporary adjustments a snap.
  • The user-adjustable wiring system provides nearly limitless possibilities for configuring audio.
  • The explicit Pass-Thru source provides more power to virtual devices being used to pipe audio with no configuration needed.
  • And more, as described on our “What's New” page.
